Machine that compresses a gas, usually air,
commonly used to power pneumatic tools, such
as road drills, paint sprayers, and dentist's
drills. Reciprocating compressors use pistons
moving in cylinders to compress the air.
Rotary compressors use a varied rotor moving
eccentrically inside a casing. The air
compressor in jet and gas turbine engines
consists of a many-varied rotor rotating at
high speed within a fixed casing, where the
rotor blades slot between fixed, or stator,
blades on the casing.
